Update from Waste Management 12.16.2025

1. Holiday Lights: Never in the Curbside Bin!

Holiday lights are e-waste and should never go into your curbside cart. They are “tanglers” that wrap around sorting equipment, causing shutdowns.

Where to Recycle Lights:

  • E-Waste Centers: Check with your municipal solid waste office for local drop-offs.
  • Retail Drop-Offs: Many major hardware stores (like Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Ace Hardware) accept broken lights seasonally.
  • Mail-in Programs: Year-round mail-in options are available from programs like Holiday LEDs.

2. Natural Christmas Trees: Mulch, Not Landfill!

Natural trees are valuable resources that can be chipped for mulch or used for erosion barriers.

How to Prepare Your Tree:

  • Remove everything (stands, lights, ornaments, tinsel, etc.) before recycling.
  • Check Local Programs: Curbside collection and drop-off programs (parks, composting) vary by community. Check your local public works department for details.

The Core Goal

Your efforts ensure holiday materials are handled responsibly and support our goal to enable more materials to be Repurposed.
