Road Closure Beginning Monday 2.9

Belinder Avenue closed between Shawnee Mission Parkway & State Park Road. Expected to take 2-4 weeks. Belinder will be closed for new storm sewer infrastructure related to a project at the pumpstation.

Please follow the marked detour route to get around the closure.

Update 2/13/26: There is a temporary closure in Fairway on State Park Rd between Aberdeen Rd and Fairway Rd to remove a tree. This should start Tuesday 2/17/26 and should only last a day or two.

Rentals now require a permit in our community. Renting any lot or structure* for fewer than 60 days is not permitted. The City has had a restriction on the minimum rental period for a number of years but recently put a rental license program in place. The license requires contact information, an exterior inspection of the property, and a license/inspection fee. The goal of the program is to ensure the community and neighbors are not negatively impacted by rentals, and to be sure the City has contact information in case any issues arise.

The City’s major capital project for 2026 is getting underway. This project includes street and stormwater improvements on Belinder Road from Tomahawk south to 71st Street, a portion of 68th Street west of Belinder, behind the three homes on the south side of 69th Street just west of Belinder and on 70th Terrace from Belinder to Overhill.   There will be major stormwater upgrades as well as replacements of the roadway, sidewalks, curbs and driveway approaches (as needed).

The project will take most of the year. From now through April, Kansas Gas, WaterOne and telecom/cable companies will be making improvements to their infrastructure. The City’s project will begin in April. The City shares its 5-year capital improvement plan with the utility companies so that they can make improvements in partnership with City projects to try and minimize disruption to property owners as much as possible. Let’s make it tough for criminals!

Many residential burglaries are "Crimes of Opportunity," such as an open garage door and open front door. Criminals often target purses, wallets and other items of value.

During some of the burglaries, residents have been home and unaware they had been burglarized until the next day. These types of crimes are particularly bothersome because most may have been prevented by taking the time to secure the garage door or front door.

Other burglaries have occurred while people were away for dinner, at work, or on vacation. Criminals have forced their way into homes and have removed electronics, jewelry and other items of value.

Remember, the most important thing is for you and your family to be safe and secure. By taking a few extra steps to ensure your home is locked and secure, you could prevent yourself from becoming a victim of a "Crime of Opportunity."

We are sorry to report that the City has been notified of a recent late night coyote attack involving two dogs on 64th Street west of Indian Lane. Please, remain vigilant —especially with smaller breeds—when outdoors, especially during evening and early-morning hours. With the prevalence and proliferation of electric bikes, scooters and more there is a substantive concern for safety of all users of City strees and sidewalks. The City has passed an ordinance specifically to address this. Highlights from Ordinance No. 1677 include:

1. All minors, including non-operators, on electric- assisted bicycles, electric-assisted scooters, motorized bicycles and motorized skateboards within the City are required to wear a secured helmet while riding.

2. Electric-assisted bicycles, electric-assisted scooters, motorized bicycles and motorized skateboards shall not be used to carry more persons at one time than the number for which it is designed and equipped.

3. Electric-assisted bicycles and motorized bicycles shall not be operated on sidewalks within the City.

When you ride your E-Bike on streets and roads, you're a vehicle in the eyes of the law.

• stop at stop signs and red lights
• use appropriate lanes
• yield when you don't have the right of way
• use turn signals or hand signals when appropriate
• use required lights in dim or dark conditions
• be respectful of pedestrians

If going less than the normal speed of traffic, bicycles and e-scooters must be operated as near to the right side of the roadway as is practical with these exceptions: when passing another vehicle going in the same direction; when preparing for a left turn; or when reasonably necessary to avoid obstacles and surface hazards.

The map shows Evergy’s planned tree trimming schedule around their transmission lines and equipment. Evergy generally prunes to provide at least 10 feet of clearance around their lines to reduce outages during thunderstorms and winter weather. Evergy’s normal procedure is to leave the removed limbs onsite for the property owner to remove. The City Arborist works with Evergy’s pruning contractors to try and address issues and questions from residents. Please contact City Hall if you need any assistance.
